COLLABORATIVELY GUIDING YOU ON THE PATH OF HEALING

Perhaps you or you child are feeling down or anxious, maybe you're unsure about your child's behaviors and feel lost regarding next steps to improve their choices, or maybe you just feel that you have exhausted your options to help yourself or your loved one.  Whatever your mental health needs may be, we are here to offer treatment, guidance, and support for you and/or your child.  At Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Services of Maine, CAPS of Maine, we view each individual in a holistic manner and believe that working collaboratively with individuals, families, and schools bring the best outcomes.

At CAPS of Maine, we also believe that the treatment of mental health disorders is more effective the earlier treatment is started.  This will help prevent or reduce severe and chronic problems as children grow up.  The National Institute of Mental Health has noted that "Mental health is an important part of overall health for children as well as adults. For many adults who have mental disorders, symptoms were present—but often not recognized or addressed—in childhood and youth."1   By meeting the mental health needs of youth, we hope to put them on a healthier path for many years to come.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR VISIT

At your first visit, there will be a very thorough interview; this is called the Psychiatric Evaluation, Diagnostic Evaluation, or Intake.  During the interview, it is common that the provider speaks with the identified patient and family members, alone and together. The evaluation usually lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the issue at hand.  This is when the provider gathers information and formulates a plan for treatment.  Patients and their families will be involved in a discussion about diagnoses and treatment options, and these discussions will be ongoing throughout treatment.  The treatment plan is collaborative - meaning, CAPS of Maine providers try to utilize a method of treating patients called Shared Decision Making, which involves working together with their patients and families to develop a treatment plan and working cooperatively to maintain good mental health.  Patients and family members are always encouraged to ask any questions they may have at any time during the course of treatment.   (For more information on Shared Decision Making, please refer to #2 in the reference section below.)

Mental health treatment does not solely entail the use of psychotropic medications.  There are other treatment options including psychotherapy and alternative treatment modalities such as acupuncture or bibliotherapy.  At CAPS of Maine, we provide medication management, individual and/or family therapy, depending on your needs.  Medications and psychotherapy have been researched thoroughly and have been found to be an effective treatment for mental health disorders.  At CAPS of Maine, we will work with you to find the most appropriate treatment for you and/or your child in a mindful and collaborative way.
